Proof of the legal texts

This page documents which version of the legal texts on this website existed when. Listed for each version are the checksum, the Bitcoin block, the Merkle root and every file needed for independent verification.

The anchor establishes an upper bound: the text existed in this form no later than the time of the block and has been unchanged since. It does not establish from when a version applied. "Recorded on" denotes the retrieval, not the start of validity.

The checksum itself is not in the block and cannot be searched for there. A block condenses several thousand transactions into a single Merkle root; the link is made by the proof file.

Check it yourself

  1. Download the proof files of the version concerned: page.txt, manifest.json and manifest.json.ots.
  2. Recompute the checksum with shasum -a 256 page.txt. The result must match the checksum shown above and appear in the manifest under sha256_text.
  3. Verify the timestamp with ots verify -f manifest.json manifest.json.ots from the opentimestamps-client package. With your own Bitcoin node the command confirms block and time in full. Without a node, the verifier at opentimestamps.org does the same, computing manifest and proof file in the browser.
  4. In addition, compare the Merkle root shown above with the header of the named block in a public block explorer. This confirms that the block carries the stated root.
