Barley grass, wheatgrass, spirulina or chlorella: which powder suits you?

3 min read

On a spoon, all four powders look green. In the kitchen they are different: barley grass and wheatgrass come from young cereal grasses. Chlorella is a freshwater alga, while spirulina belongs to the cyanobacteria. If you want a powder for a smoothie, bowl or glass of water, start by comparing the ingredient and the amount you will actually use.

The four powders at a glance

Barley Grass5 g2.0 g1.4 g
Wheatgrass5 g2.2 g1.1 g
Spirulina12 g1.1 g7.9 g
Chlorella12 g1.7 g6.4 g

These are the declared values per stated serving. A 12 g serving of spirulina or chlorella contains more than twice as much powder as a 5 g serving of grass. Keep that difference in mind when comparing nutrients; figures per 100 g alone do not tell you what ends up in your glass.

Which powder suits which recipe?

bunaroba Barley Grass and Wheatgrass come from Canterbury in New Zealand. Both can be stirred into a smoothie with apple and banana or sprinkled over a bowl. Barley grass is described as mild and slightly earthy. Try wheatgrass in the same basic recipe, then decide which green note you prefer.

Spirulina and chlorella have a more pronounced flavour. Begin with a small amount in water or juice. If that tastes too strong, try a berry and banana smoothie. Add the powders one at a time at first so you can find out which flavour you like before combining them.

A comparison that works in the shop

Turn the container around and check three things: ingredient, serving size and values per serving. A fair comparison keeps the amount and the nutrition figures together. A teaspoon is an imprecise measure because powders have different densities. A kitchen scale helps if you want to repeat a recipe.

All four bunaroba powders are certified organic and each contains a single ingredient. Choose the powder whose flavour and use fit your kitchen.
