Hemp seeds, oil and protein: three ingredients, three jobs

3 min read

A plate of roasted potatoes, herbs and a fried egg is ready to eat. Would you scatter hulled hemp seeds over it or add a little hemp oil? Both can work, but they do different things to the dish. Hemp protein belongs in breakfast muesli more naturally than on the finished plate. All three ingredients come from hemp seeds, yet they are far from interchangeable in the kitchen.

From seed to ingredient

bunaroba Hemp Seeds have had their outer shells removed. The soft kernels can be eaten as they are and scattered over food. bunaroba Hemp Oil is cold-pressed from hemp seeds. Its nutty, slightly sharp flavour suits cold dishes. To make bunaroba Hemp Protein, oil is removed from hemp seeds before the remaining material is made into powder. The powder can be stirred into drinks or food.

The figures on the labels tell a similar story. Per 100 g, the hulled seeds contain 34 g of protein, the powder 50 g and the oil 0 g. Hemp oil is a cooking oil, not a substitute for the seeds or powder if you are looking for their protein content.

One dish, three different moves

Start with a bowl of warm potatoes, cucumber, herbs and a boiled egg. For the dressing, mix yoghurt with lemon juice and salt, then add the hemp oil at the end. Scatter the hulled seeds over the plated dish. You will notice the seeds as a distinct ingredient, while the oil flavours the dressing.

There is no need to add hemp protein to the same dish. To try it, stir a teaspoon into a small portion of yoghurt first. This lets you see how the taste and texture change before using more. The pack suggests 30 g as a serving; a smaller amount is enough for a first kitchen test.

What to look for on the label

The three bunaroba products have short ingredient lists: hulled hemp seeds, cold-pressed hemp seed oil and pure hemp protein powder. All three are certified organic, originate in the EU and are packed in Switzerland. Let the dish guide your choice: seeds for texture, oil for a cold dressing and powder for stirring in. A recipe rarely needs all three at once.
